Dalek
This was the episode that convinced me that new Who really knew what it was doing.

It's a lovely episode. The Dalek is actually given some real menace. After all the years of being defeated by the Doctor, I must admit that I don't find the Daleks that scary anymore as a rule. But this episode does a great job at demonstrating the threat of one lone dalek. Statton, too, is a great middle-level threat, and he's played with just the right injection of believability amid the meglomania.

The climax with Rose is beautifully orchestrated, and the episode manages to both do something different with the daleks' psyches and also avoid schmaltz by justifying it logically. I've seen the ending three times now, and it still made me cry. *sniff*! So it's either really good or really bad :-)

Seriously though, the final scene is beatifully written and played.

I'll leave the final summation to Jen, who says:

"I loved that dalek! I would have been its friend."

This was the episode that convinced me to give up on this new Who and I haven't bothered with it since. And yeah, I told Rob that.

As you know, there's a huge part of me that loves the fact I've a friend who *doesn't* like that Dalek episode. But I still feel bad it's driven away from the series altogether. I think you'd find the stories written by Steven Moffat, at least, well worth a look.

You know ... how people have like their gay friend or their black friend. I'm your friend who doesn't like the episode you wrote.

Oh, I see!

Yeah, you're the friend I'm frightened might be the only one with taste.

My black friend and my gay friend were both annoying supportive about the episode. But that's okay. That wasn't their function.

Thanks so much, Ben!

I've a sort of love / hate relationship with Dalek. It's not really the episode I set out to write - although a greater understanding of how writing for someone else's TV show makes me realise it would *never* have been the episode I set out to write, and that I should be grateful enough of what I wanted made it on to the screen at all. And it's hard to be on a single writing project for the best part of a year, and not get thoroughly sick of it. But that said, I feel enormously proud I was let on the Doctor Who revival right from the start, and it makes me very happy that a lot of people get so much from this story. It was, as I say, nearly a year out of my life, so it's very hard not to feel some connection to it, above and beyond an ordinary commission! And it means a lot when people make me feel that year was well spent.

And I still think the electrocution scene is cool. Scientifically impossible, I think. But cool. I got to kill lots of extras!
